France starts off with a bang

First verdicts from the EuroSUP Sardinia 2018, the European Championship of Stand Up Paddle Racing and SUP Wave that will be taking place in Torregrande (Oristano) until 9th September, which today saw the Technical Race on a 4.6 km course by also passing on the beach twice.

Today France, Vice World Champion, by gaining three medals staked a claim on the winning of the European Champion title as a nation.

The gold and bronze medals in the Men’s category speak French. The title of European Champion of Technical Race went to the transalpine Martin Vitry whereas the third position was taken by his compatriot Tom Auber. It’s silver for the Danish Casper Steinfath, a Stand Up Paddle veteran despite his young age, with already two medals gained during the past World Championships. Truly amazing the fourth position of his compatriot Christian Andersen, only 17 years old. Hard luck for Claudio Nika and Tommaso Pampinella, disadvantaged by a far from optimal start. But nevertheless, they kept their positions in the leading group and finished their race respectively seventh and tenth.

French supremacy also in the Women’s category with the outstanding Olivia Piana, who after winning the bronze medal at the last World Championship, now takes home the European Champion title for the Technical Race.

Right behind her the Spanish Laura Quetglas, who forfeited the final sprint for the gold medal by falling at the last buoy, and the Portuguese Angela Fernandes. Sixth place for the very young Italian athlete Laura Dal Pont. An excellent result, considering she’s only 15 (the youngest competing athlete at the EuroSUP Sardinia) and the level and experience of the other racing athletes!

Rest day tomorrow for the EuroSUP Sardinia so to allow the athletes to recover from today’s race efforts and visit the beauties of Oristano and of the Sinis Peninsula. Back on track on Friday with the Long Distance, waiting for the swell which should allow the SUP Wave competition to take place on Saturday, September 8th!
