It fades at the last second the opportunity for the Italian national team to gain its first medal at the EuroSUP Sardinia 2018, European Championship of Stand Up Paddle Racing and SUP Wave, underway in Torregrande, Oristano.
In the Long Distance, held this morning on a 14-km-course, Italy didn’t manage to take home those medals widely within its reach. France and Denmark instead consolidated their positions at the top of the overall ranking, and now there is only one race left to the end of the event, the Wave one.
Just think that today’s race started in the best way! After the start at 10 am, Leonard Nika was leading up to the third buoy, but he then got passed by the French Martin Vitry (already winner in the Technical Race on Wednesday) and the Danish Casper Steinfath. At the heels of the first three also Tommaso Esposito who in the final part of the race managed to get the second place behind Vitry.
Then the unexpected, at the penultimate buoy Federico falls losing those seconds that allowed Steinfath, Auber and Nika to pass him. But he doesn’t give up, in the last meters of the course catches his compatriot and challenges Auber in a neck and neck to gain the bronze which he loses for a split second.
The Spanish Laura Quetglas dominates in the Women’s category, followed by the French Olivia Piana and the English Marie Buchanan. Fifth position for our Caterina Stenta, who just after the start broke her water camel-back. This forced her to cover all 14 km without being able to hydrate.
Tomorrow morning, the last verdicts will be issued with the SUP Wave competition. Then, the prize giving for the European Champions in each discipline, for the Overall rankings and for the Nations ranking.
